Let’s Play: Gamification Ideas to Energize Your Audience at Any Budget

According to the National Institute of Play, “being playful is the healthiest way to spend your time.” Research shows that play helps adults build resilience, retain new information, and create memorable experiences. In short, adults learn and engage more effectively when they are having fun.

So how can associations bring more play into their events and communications?

Social-Activated Play

NAHN Gamification Quiz asking questions to your conference audience

Social media offers a free and effective way to introduce gamification. This fall, the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) celebrated its 50th anniversary by sharing background about its founding members and then turning that content into Instagram Story quizzes.

Followers learned about NAHN Living Legends while participating in a quick, low-stakes game. Weekly prize drawings encouraged participation, and one winner noted, “Thank you for doing this! It’s been very informative and empowering!”

App-Powered Adventures

Event apps are now standard at many association conferences, and they offer ideal opportunities for interactive games. At its annual conference, NAHN added a scavenger hunt into its app to increase engagement in an exhibit hall of more than 60 organizations. Attendees visited booths, scanned QR codes, and answered multiple-choice questions provided by the exhibitors. Correct answers earned attendees points on a live leaderboard, and top scorers were entered to win prizes. The result? Stronger exhibitor-attendee interactions and a more enjoyable, memorable exhibit hall experience.

Booth-to-Booth Bingo

No conference app? No problem. Associations can still spark fun, friendly competition with low-cost, offline games. This fall, the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) used printed bingo cards to drive engagement in its exhibit hall. Each Bingo square represented an exhibitor, and attendees collected signatures as they visited each table. Completing bingo earned members the chance to win a prize. Conference-goers and exhibitors loved the activity, and both requested its return for future conferences.

Playful Programming

Lastly, associations can incorporate play and gamification directly into their programming. At the AWS conference, one plenary session featured a Jeopardy-style game with teams, buzzers, and trivia questions inspired by the theme Pioneering Women Leaders. The result was a lively, interactive, team-based activity that reinforced the organization’s mission while sharing educational facts in a memorable, engaging way.

Winning Takeaways

By weaving elements of play into conferences and communications, associations can create more engaging, meaningful, and memorable experiences. Whether high-tech or low-cost, gamification helps people connect, learn, and enjoy the moments that matter

At AMR, we help associations bring ideas like these to life. If your organization is ready to explore fresh, fun, and effective ways to energize your audience, we’re here to open the door.
